TOOLS: HOT-SPOT SPOTTER

By Kevin McCaney

Digital WiFi detector won’t slow you down

WiFi detectors aren’t just for network hackers. The good guys—that would be you—use them, too.

Executives on the go might need to find a cafe with a strong wireless hot spot. Network administrators back at the office can use a detector to identify the outer reaches of their wireless LANs and whether passersby can gain access.

Canary Wireless
The Digital Hotspotter from Canary Wireless LLC of Hoffman Estates, Ill., can make all this a bit easier.

The $50 Hotspotter, released late last year as the first digital WiFi detector, lets you locate accessible WiFi signals, identify them as public or private networks and determine their strength so you can choose the best one.

And it lets you do all this without having to boot up your computer.

When it detects a signal, the device’s LCD screen displays the network ID, signal strength, encryption status— whether it is an open or closed network— and channel information.

Where wireless networks overlap, it gives information on each.

Its pocket size is another feature that can make keeping in touch outside the office a little more seamless. Visit Canary Wireless at www.canarywireless.com.
