TOOLS: Wizard could cast spell over budget-minded execs

By John Breeden II

For busy government executives who don’t have time to learn the entire Palm OS or all the shortcuts with Pocket PC, the answer may be something simple, functional and inexpensive.

The Sharp Wizard is technically an organizer and not a full handheld computer, but you would be hard-pressed to find too many differences between them and this little system.

And no longer will you have to worry about carrying your $400 or $500 device close against your vest when you travel for fear of damaging an expensive piece of equipment. The Wizard can be found in almost any electronics store for about $20.

The Wizard has a lot of the functions seen in pricey personal digital assistants. It has enough memory, about 1.5M, to store 7,000 telephone numbers and contact data. You can sort your contacts into three different phone books and keep your business and personal acquaintances separate. Searching the database is easy and can be done by name or partial name.

You also can sync the Wizard with Microsoft Outlook in your desktop PC or notebook, using the Universal Serial Bus cable and CD that come with the device. That way, you don’t have to enter all your contacts using the stylus.
